Assembly reference failure - in the same directory

Here's an issue I had and have in both 2007 and 2008 versions of SW: occasionally I will attempt to open an assembly (both through the SW menu and by double-clicking in Explorer), and all the parts will be missing (greyed out). I keep assemblies and parts in the same directory, don't mess around with file names or locations in Windows, and have "Search file locations" turned on in External References, though that shouldn't matter.

If I open the drawing of an assembly with this issue, I get the Xed-out boxes. If I open all the parts (sometimes there are a lot...), then the assembly will load. If I attempt to check the References button in the Open window, I get an error claiming that the assembly file must not have been saved in the current version of SW. This is, of course, silly. I saved it the day before.

The "File not found" error does not come up, and I am not given the option to hunt for the "missing" parts manually.

This is inconsistent. It happened this morning, and after searching fruitlessly here for an answer, I tried again, and the file opened up with no problems. I suspected it may be network speed related (I work off a server), but my coworkers don't have the same problem. Is there any way to tell SW to "look harder" for files before giving up?

Also, Hi! I'm Dave, I'm an engineer, work on garden tools, and have been using SolidWorks for 4 years. My first port on the forums.

Any guesses? Thanks in advance...

Dave

Hi yah all

first post here so bear with me k. Finally asked people were the button is to make a new topic on here.

On my latest project I decided to use display states to created the different shaded views of the various assemblies I need in the drawings I'm making. This is a fairly large assembly with the assemblies going several layers deep. I was empressed with the view flexibility I had up to this point and was asking myself why I hadn't been using display states before.

Well two days ago I started running into problems. Currently I'm working on making display states for assembly layer 2. I am trying to create a display state that changes the transparency of a part that is part of an assembly that was inserted into assembly layer 1.

The problem:
On that same assembly in which I'm trying to change the transparency of a part I can change the transparency on one or two parts but not the other 10 parts.

Any suggestion as to what is going on here? My VAR points me to the help files which don't give me anything useful to go by.

Thanks,

Neil

I have a part that was initially intended to be a mirrored part. Therefore, I created a mirrored part and have been working with the original part (and the mirrored part) in my assembly.

Along the way in the design process, I now have a need to have differing hole patterns in the two parts.

Is it possible to modify the original part and NOT have the mirror update? Likewise, is it possible to modify the mirrored part?

I am having issues when using the component pattern in an assembly. The pattern command works just fine but when I want to hide the pattern I have to open up the pattern and select all the components and select hide. I have had it when I hide the component being patterened the pattern hides with it but I can't figure out what makes it do this because sometimes it works and other times it doesn't. I have even had it where I have two different components being patterened in the same command and I hide the two original components and one components pattern is hidden and the other stays shown even though they are in the same pattern command. Any ideas on how to make it so when I hide the seed the pattern follows suit?

Our tools are designed in the closed position. It would be beneficial at times to be able to view the mold in the open position. It would be "neat" to have some kind of an animation capability with this also - either by dragging or some other means. Is there any way to simulate this quickly and easily? I've only been a user since April '08 so there may be something blatant I missing.

-Aaron Larson

Window to suppress in configuration of assembly?

I may have really messed up an assembly here...

I wanted to create a configuration of a large assembly where most of the items are suppressed. Note that this assembly has become quite difficult to manage and is very sluggish to do anything. I used the following steps;

-Created a new configuration.
-Selected the items to suppress with a window
-Right Click/Properties
-The pull-down window to select "This configuration" (or other configurations) was ghosted out. So, I took a chance and selected the "suppress" radio button.

To check if I was successful in my intent, I switched to the default configuration. To my dismay, I had apparently suppressed the parts in all configurations Undo was not available... But, not to worry, I will just use a back up of my assembly!

NOT! The backup file, even though it was created before I suppressed the parts shows the parts suppressed. Investigating deeper, as I opened the sub components, the parts had been suppressed in each individual part file!

So, SW has successfully messed up half of my part files.

What should I have done? Is there any way to easily fix what has happened?

Joe Dunfee
